Album SynopsisPetra released Come and Join Us in 1977. Bob Hartman has said that this CD was a compromise, because they had to cut "Killing My Old Man" from the CD, and the record company wouldn't let them title the CD "God Gave Rock and Roll To You." The sound on this album is improved from their first one, and you can begin to see growth in the lyric-writing. On this album Petra continues to rock, moving away from the southern-rock to a sound more contemporary to the 70s. This album also features "Holy Ghost Power," which has a distinctly disco-style sound! |
Lyrics
God Gave Rock and Roll to You
Words by Russ Ballard
You can learn to dance
Or you can be a square
You can let the music take you anywhere
But where will you be when the music's gone
You can learn to sing
You can play guitar
You can learn to rock
You can be a star
(Chorus)
God gave rock and roll to you
Gave rock and roll to you
Put it in the soul of everyone
If you love the sound
Then don't forget the source
You can turn around
You can change your course
'Cause it's never too late to change your mind
You can love the rock
And let Him free your soul
Or you can let the old man take his toll
It's never too late to change your mind
Repeat Chorus
Ask Him In
Words and music by Bob Hartman
Now that you've heard the music
Where do you go from here
You see music only takes you to the place
Where you're ready to hear
We could sing and tell you we love you
And you could say it wasn't true
But how can you say that about a man
Who died for you
(Chorus)
Jesus is holding out His love to you
But He made it so that you have to choose
How can you walk away empty again
When you know that you've got nothing to lose
You could probably think of a reason
To wait until another day
But the spirit is speaking, telling you
Today is the day
Jesus gave His life as a ransom
Was crucified and laid in a grave
But He rose again and made a new way
For man to be saved
Repeat Chorus
Sally
Words and music by Greg Hough
You remember Sally, used to be so happy
Walkin' down that street with a smile upon her face
Never had a worry, she never had a care
And when she came to see me she would brighten up my face
Sally was that kind of girl, sure would like to know
And everywhere that Sally went the lamb was sure to go
Somebody said they saw her on the other side of town
Said she was smokin' weed and drinkin', probably foolin' 'round
That's too bad about Sally because she was so nice
The next time that I see that girl, I'll give her my advice
Why would she want to run away from God and all His love
And go back in that world and live so hard and rough
You know that I don't feel too bad, Sally moved away
'Cause everytime I'd look at her she set my mind astray
Now Sally was that kind of girl, I wish that she was mine
Just to know that she was there, even that was fine
There's just one thing that I don't understand
And that's the part that's the part that's rough
Why would she want to run away from God and all His love
Repeat twice
Without You I Would Surely Die
Words and music by Greg Hough
Sometimes I feel like I'm all mixed up inside
Sometimes I feel like I wanna go run and hide
But then You put Your arms around me
And I feel Your sweet love surround me
Then I know just where I'm going
I tell Your sincerely You're the sweetest person I've ever know
And I love You dearly You know I'd never, never let You go
'Cause when You put Yours arms around me
And I feel Your sweet love surround me
Then I know just where I'm going
(Chorus)
You keep my head on my shoulders
I'm well adjusted inside
You are my love, You are my only life
Without You I would surely die
And there is no other that I love as much as I love You
I wish that my brother could love You just as much as I do
'Cause when You put Your arms around me
And I feel Your sweet love surround me
Then I know just where I'm going
There is no more doubt, there's no more knowing
Repeat Chorus
Come and Join Us
Words and music by Bob Hartman
We are like stones built together in a wall
Made up of whosoever the Master Builder calls
We are not worthy but together we are strong
Built on the Rock of Ages the wall is almost done
(Chorus)
Come and join us in the sunlight
You've been sittin' in the shade too long
Come and give us a chance to sing you a song
Come and join us in the sunlight
If you would reach you could touch the sky
Come and drink from the well that will never run dry
We are like stranger and pilgrims in this world
Lifting the blood stained banner our flag has been unfurled
We have a homeland no eyes have ever seen
But those who've gone before us whose souls have been redeemed
Repeat Chorus
We are like children held in the Father's hand
Growing into the image of Christ the Son of Man
We are not perfect but changing every day
Through trials and tribulation we'll find the perfect way
Repeat Chorus
Where Can I Go
Words and music by Bob Hartman
I could take a plane to New York City
I could hitchhike all the way to L.A.
I could follow the sunrise tomorrow
But be as close to You as today
I'm beginning to see what You mean to me
I just can't get away from Your love
(Chorus)
Where Can I go without Your love there to haunt me
I do believe You're playing to win
I can't understand what makes You really want me
But I'm feelin' like it's time to give in
I could climb the golden stairway to heaven
I could catch the crowded highway to hell
If I could find a place nobody has ever been
I bet You'd probably be there as well
I don't know why I've waited so long
Repeat Chorus
(Bridge)
Darkness is the same as the light to You
Daytime is the same as the night
When You put Your chains of love around my soul
I know it won't be long before I let You take control
I could take a submarine to Atlantis
I could take a flying saucer to Mars
I could ride on the Milky Way someday
But You've already numbered the stars
I'm beginning to hear Your voice is so near
Tellin' me You love me again
Repeat Chorus
Holy Ghost Power
Words and music by Bob Hartman
Everybody's talking about power
Power to the people they say
Everybody tryin' to get more power
They're goin' in circles today
I'm sick of this jive, gonna hop in my rod
Gonna motivate clear across town
Gonna go to church, gonna end my search
Gonna fill my soul with power
(Chorus)
Holy Ghost power gonna fill you today
Holy Ghost power gonna take you away
Holy Ghost power gonna fill you within
Holy Ghost power gonna save you from sin
Don't give me no jive, you ain't even alive
'Till you get your heart right with God
Better ask Him in and forget your sin
Let Him fill your soul with power
Repeat Chorus
Woman Don't You Know
Words and music by Greg Hough and Bob Hartman
I know that you been scheming
Trying to run my head around
But I know all about you girl
You've been lost - But I've been found
Woman don't you know
You ain't gonna pull me down
I told you 'bout a new way
Of livin' life and having fun
I told you 'bout the Spirit
And walking in the light of the Son
Woman don't you know
I ain't gonna come undone
I told you about Salvation
But you don't seem to want no part
You've been trying to take me
You've been trying to steal my heart
Woman don't you know
I ain't gonna have no part
